BUNCH/WATKINS NAMED MUSTANG-OF-THE-WEEK

Mount Ida College sophomore running back Johrone Bunch (Meriden, CT/F.T. Maloney) and senior wide receiver Kyle Watkins (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) have been selected as this week's Mustangs-of-the-Week. Bunch, who was a crucial part in the Mustangs 29-28 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) victory over visiting Husson University on Halloween this past Saturday, scored two touchdowns and rushed for 167 yards on 27 carries. Bunch also punched in the go ahead two point conversion with 3:44 remaining in the fourth quarter that was critical in capturing the victory and keeping the Mustangs hopes alive for a berth into the first ever ECFC title game. Bunch also cracked into the Mount Ida football program record books this past week breaking two rushing records both set by Mount Ida alumnus Antwan Harris back in 2005. Bunch broke the single season rushing record (1,405) needing 132 yards and getting 167. He also broke the single season rushing touchdown record, also set by Harris (11), scoring two against the Eagles giving him 12 for the season. Johrone has landed in third place in the NCAA statistical record books in rushing for the 2009 season in the nine games that he has played.
Watkins played a significant role in the 29-28 victory over Husson this past Saturday with a key 85 yard kickoff return to pull the Mustangs within a touchdown and carry the momentum of the game over to Mount Ida. On the ensuing kickoff immediately following an Eagles touchdown to give the visitors a 28-14 lead over the hosts, Watkins took an 85 yards kick return to the house with 11:41 remaining to pull the Mustangs within a score of Husson (21-28) giving the hosts the momentum they needed to get back into the game.
The Mustangs will have to wait to see what happens this Friday when the regular season contest between third place teams Gallaudet University and SUNY Maritime College go head-to-head, both of which are 3-2. With Martime hosting Gallaudet, there are two scenarios: If Maritime wins the Mariners would finish tied with Mount Ida at 4-2 and would earn the berth as a result of their 42-0 defeat of Mount Ida on October 24. Should Gallaudet win, the Bison would finish tied with Mount Ida at 4-2. Mount Ida holds the tiebreak having defeated Gallaudet 23-6 on September 19 sending the Mustangs into the first ever ECFC title game in the conference's inaugural season.
The Mustangs will host their final regular season game of 2009 against visiting non-conference Utica College on senior day starting at 12:00 noon. The Mustangs dropped a 40-8 loss to the Pioneers last season in week five.
