MOUNT IDA LOSES TO MORRISVILLE STATE
It was a wet and wild day on the campus of Mount Ida College
this Saturday the Mustangs getting handed their seventh loss of the
season to visitor Morrisville State, 15-6. The Mustangs wrapped up
2007 with a 3-7 overall record and a positive attitude towards the
2008 campaign.
It was also Senior Day, acknowledging eight Mustangs on their hard
work and dedication to the program. They were quarterback
P.J. Matthews (Baltimore, MD/Patterson),
defensive back Dajuan Walker (Milford, PA/Delaware
Valley), punter Richie Dykas (Dedham,
MA/Dedham), tight end Mark Mitchell
(Waltham, MA/Waltham/Dean College), linebacker
Alfred Blumenthal (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern), center and captain Ralph Paul
(Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow), offensive lineman
Marc Piccirilli (Mohegan Lake, NY/JFK
Catholic), linebacker Leonard Barrett
(Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) and Team Manager
Mark Hughes (Wellesley,
MA/Wellesley).
Mount Ida put up the first points of the game with a two yard
touchdown run by quarterback PJ Matthews (Baltimore,
MD/Patterson) to give the Mustangs the 6-0 lead with
12:47 to go in the second quarter. It was only a two play drive for
four yards because the visitors fumbled the snap and the home team
would recover giving MIC great field position for the easy score.
Kicker Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA/William
Tennent) was unable to convert the PAT.
Morrisville would answer right back with a run of their own on an
eight play 73 yard drive with 4:00 minutes to go in the half off an
eight yard run by running back Ahmad Burks (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran)
knotting it at 6-6. Kicker Derek Mulson (Rensselaer, NY/LaSalle)
would also miss the kick after attempt to keep the score tied.
It wouldn’t end there for the visitors sneaking in another
off a one yard run by Burks for his second touchdown of the game to
give his team the lead 12-6 with 26 seconds remaining in the half.
The PAT was botched again by Mulson, his second miss for the free
point. It was a seven play 41 yard drive that would give
Morrisville the lead for good.
It was raining so hard that no one could hold onto the ball with
most of the second half becoming a defensive slugfest. The only
other points would come off a field goal by the visitors. Mulson
redeemed himself by sliding one through the uprights from 37 yards
out on a line drive kick making the score 15-6 with 5:56 left in
the fourth quarter.
Senior Richard Dykas (Dedham,
MA/Dedham) would go out with a bang catching
three passes for 33 yards, his best game in a Mount Ida uniform.
Matthews would have the only touchdown of the day for his team
going 7-21 through the air with one interception and 77 yards
throwing. Freshman running back Joe Berger (Washington
Depot, CT/Canterbury) gave the Mustangs something to
smile about with 59 rushing yards on the day.
Mount Ida Football will finish its season on a disappointing 3-7
with much to look forward to going into the 2008 season with some
talented freshman who hope to step up their sophomore year.
