Football Week #10 Notes: Husson Preview

Football Week #10 Notes: Husson Preview

The Mount Ida football team will look to close out its 2017 season on a high note on Saturday afternoon, as the Mustangs head north to battle Husson in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference finale for both squads.  Kickoff at the Winkin Complex in Bangor, Maine is set for Noon EST.

Mount Ida looks to end the year with its second straight triumph and its fifth overall under 10th-year Head Coach Mike Landers, as the Mustangs enter Saturday’s clash after posting a 58-41 ECFC victory over Anna Maria last Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.  Sophomore quarterback Mike Pina (Brockton, Mass./Xaverian) amassed 360 yards of total offense and accounted for four total scores on the day (including three through the air) to pace the hosts’ attack and earn the nod as ECFC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts, while junior defensive back DeSean Hart (Mays Landing, N.J./Holy Spirit) claimed the league’s Defensive Player of the Week accolades after scoring a pair of touchdowns on a 100-yard interception return and a 90-yard fumble recovery while adding 10 total tackles on the day.

Senior wide receiver Nick Hewitt (Killingly, Conn./Killingly) hauled in six receptions for 119 yards and a score against the Amcats, while Pina and freshman running back Marcus Mcbean (Dorchester, Mass./Archbishop Williams) combined for 129 rushing yards.  The Mustangs’ defensive and special teams units combined for four touchdowns in the Senior Day win, as in addition to Hart’s heroics, as Mount Ida received a 28-yard interception return from senior linebacker Chris Medeiros (Pelham, N.H./Pelham) and a 60-yard punt return from junior Michael Whitsett (Springfield, Mass./Chicopee Comp).  The result marked the second straight season that Landers’ crew topped the half-century mark on the scoreboard against Anna Maria, including a 55-point outburst in Paxton in 2016.

While Husson has already clinched the ECFC regular season championship, the Eagles are looking to head into the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships on a high note under 11th-year Head Coach Gabby Price.  Husson brings a six-game winning streak into Saturday’s affair and has won eight of nine outings overall on the fall, including a 63-0 home triumph over Alfred State last Saturday afternoon.  The Eagle attack is led by senior running back John Smith, who has rushed for 1,630 yards and scored 23 touchdowns, while junior quarterback Cory Brandon has completed nearly 63 percent of his pass attempts for 1,476 yards and 14 scores.  Husson is led defensively by junior linebacker Elvin Suazo Jr.’s 60 total tackles, while junior defensive back Quan Soyini has recorded seven interceptions to date.

Saturday’s game marks the 15th meeting between Mount Ida and Husson, as the Mustangs hold an 8-6 edge over the Eagles in the all-time series between the two squads.  Husson has won three straight match-ups from Mount Ida, as the last Mustang triumph came back in 2013 with a 6-0 win in Bangor.
