FINAL: HUSSON 42, MOUNT IDA 14
BANGOR, Maine -- Senior running back John Smith (Fayetteville, Ga.) rushed for 287 yards and five touchdowns as Husson captured the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference outright title with a 42-14 league victory over Mount Ida Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex.
Smith scored on runs of two, 70 and 10 yards in the opening 22-plus minutes of play to stake the host Eagles (9-1, 7-0 ECFC) to a 21-0 advantage at the break, and his three-yard scamper with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter extended Husson’s edge to 28-0. The visiting Mustangs (4-6, 3-4 ECFC) sliced that margin in half late in the stanza with a pair of scores that came just 2:23 apart, as junior Andrew Light (Absecon, N.J.) accounted for both touchdowns on a 67-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Mike Pina (Brockton, Mass.) as well as 54-yard pass from senior Josh David (Sandown, N.H.) on a trick play. Smith’s fifth visit to the end zone of the day from three yards out in the opening 4:31 of the final frame gave the Eagles a 35-14 lead, and the hosts closed out the scoring with 6:27 to play when junior quarterback Cory Brandon (Pembroke, Mass.) connected with fellow junior Ty Bassett (Dracut, Mass.) on an 18-yard touchdown pass to account for the final margin.
Smith amassed nearly three-quarters of Husson’s total offensive output of 445 yards on the day, as he closed out the regular season just 83 yards shy of the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the year. Brandon completed 15-of-22 pass attempts for 142 yards, including four connections each with senior Robenson Saintard (Port Charlotte, Fla.) and freshman Kyree Calli (Harrisburg, Pa.) for a combined 71 yards, as the Eagles held the ball for over 33 minutes. Pina completed 13-of-22 pass attempts for 132 yards in the setback for Mount Ida, as all of Light’s 121 receiving yards came on his two touchdown receptions as part of 185 yards of total offense for the Mustangs.
Junior Elvin Suazo Jr. (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way defensively with nine total tackles for Husson, which recorded four sacks and limited the visitors to a negative yard rushing for the contest. David registered a game-high 16 total stops (13 solo) to go with his touchdown pass on offense in the setback for Mount Ida, which also received 11 and 10 tackles, respectively, from junior DeSean Hart (Mays Landing, N.J.) and freshman De’Andre Goldson-Fisher (Springfield, Mass.).
Husson will bring a seven-game winning streak into next weekend’s opening round of the NCAA Division III Championships, as those pairings will be announced on Sunday. Today’s contest marked the season finale for Mount Ida, as the Mustangs posted four overall victories (three in league play) under 10th-year Head Coach Mike Landers this fall.
