NEW HAVEN, Conn. --  Senior Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn.) posted a double-double effort of 32 points, 18 rebounds and four assists to lead four starters in double figures as Albertus Magnus notched a 97-77 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over Mount Ida Tuesday evening at the Messer Athletic Center.

The host Falcons (7-3, 4-0 GNAC) scored 20 of the game’s first 22 points in the opening 7:04 of action to take control of the contest, as Albertus Magnus shot 56 percent (20-36) overall in the first half to build a 50-31 advantage at the break.  The visiting Mustangs (7-5, 1-2 GNAC) used a 16-8 run over the first 4:31 after intermission to close back to within 11 (58-47) on senior Kevin Conner’s (Mansfield, Mass.) three-pointer, but the hosts regained an 18-point edge over the next two-plus minutes of play and built that margin as high as 26 points in posting their fourth win in the last five outings.

Sophomore Jahmerikah Green-Younger (Norwalk, Conn.) added 24 points in the triumph for the Falcons, who received a double-double performance of 15 points and 14 rebounds from senior Amir Maddred (Camden, N.J.).  Junior Ryan Pittman (Stratford, Conn.) closed out the quartet of double-figure scorers with 10 points, six assists and four boards for Albertus Magnus, which shot an even 50 percent (35-70) from the field overall and held a 49-40 rebounding advantage for the evening, as the hosts converted 17 offensive caroms into 19 second chance points.

Senior Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) scored 17 points in the setback for Mount Ida, which received 13 points and seven rebounds from fellow senior Errald Jordine (Stamford, Conn.).  Sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) chipped in with 13 points and six boards off the bench for the Mustangs, who received nine points and seven caroms from freshman Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.) along with seven points and eight rebounds from junior Dennis Ross (Portland, Maine).  The visitors shot 40 percent (27-67) from the floor overall but hit just four of 23 attempts from behind the arc on the night, as Mount Ida converted 14 Albertus Magnus turnovers into 17 points.
