FINAL:              MOUNT IDA 81, LESLEY 71

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  Senior Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Mount Ida overcame a three-point deficit with a closing 28-15 run over the final 10:18 of play to post an 81-71 non-league college men’s basketball victory over Lesley Monday evening at the Nicholas Athletic Center.

The visiting Mustangs (2-2) trailed 56-53 before a DeFillippi three-pointer sparked a 14-0 run over a four-plus minute stretch, as senior Errald Jordine’s (Stamford, Conn.) three-pointer gave Mount Ida a 67-56 lead with 5:45 remaining in the contest.  The host Lynx (3-2) crept back to within seven on three occasions in the closing minutes, the last (71-64) coming on senior Marquise Johnson’s (Hampton, Va.) lay-in with 2:08 to play, but free throws by DeFillippi, senior Jacob Sartain (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) over the final 1:58 of action sealed the visitors’ triumph.

Lesley raced out to a 17-5 advantage on junior Joey Martin’s (Melbourne, Fla.) three-pointer just 5:22 into the game, and the Lynx built their lead to as much as 14 points before the Mustangs scored 22 of 29 points in less than eight minutes to take a 34-33 edge on senior John Oliver’s (North Babylon, N.Y.) three-pointer with 2:40 remaining in the half.  The two squads traded the lead four times before settling for a 39-39 tie at the break, as Mount Ida grabbed a five-point edge (52-47) on DeFillippi’s trey with 14:04 remaining only to see the hosts respond with a 9-1 run of their own to take their three-point lead on a Johnson lay-in that set up the visitors’ final late scoring surge.

Jordine added 14 points, nine rebounds and pair of assists in the win for the Mustangs, who received 11 points off the bench from Sartain along with 10 points and a pair of steals from senior Jayson Clark (Austin, Tex.).  Vanderhorst added nine points (seven at the foul line) and five boards for Mount Ida, which received eight points, eight rebounds and four assists from Oliver.  Senior Kevin Conner (Mansfield, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.) combined for 11 points and six caroms for the visitors, who shot 52 percent from the field (26-50) overall and connected for eight three-pointers while holding a 21-11 scoring edge at the charity stripe for the evening.  The Mustangs scored 32 points off of 22 Lesley turnovers and outrebounded the Lynx by a 40-31 margin overall.

Junior Xeo Golding (Windermere, Fla.) led all scorers with 20 points and five rebounds in the setback for Lesley, which received 16 points, seven boards and three assists from Johnson along with 11 points from Martin.  Freshman Chase Howard (San Diego, Calif.) added nine points off the bench for the Lynx, who shot 41 percent (26-63) from the floor and hit eight from behind the arc on the night.
