FINAL:                  NORWICH 69, MOUNT IDA 63

NORTHFIELD, Vt. --  Senior Mike Hogervorst (Leiden, Netherlands) scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds as Norwich held off a furious comeback in the closing minutes to notch a 69-63 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over Mount Ida Tuesday evening at Andrews Hall.

The host Cadets (10-11, 7-5 GNAC) scored the game’s first 10 points and shot 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes of play to take a 43-20 advantage at the break, and Norwich maintained a double-digit lead until the visiting Mustangs (9-13, 3-10 GNAC) used eight unanswered points in a 2:16 span to creep back to within five (59-54) on senior Brendan Cunningham’s (Quincy, Mass.) three-pointer with 4:12 remaining.  Four straight points from Hogervorst extended the Cadets’ edge to nine a minute later, but Mount Ida rattled off seven unanswered points to pull within a bucket (63-61) on freshman Kevin Nunez’s (Dorchester, Mass.) lay-in with 27 seconds to play.  A pair of Hogervorst free throws restored the hosts’ four-point lead, and after senior Jayson Clark (Austin, Tex.) answered with a pair from the charity stripe 11 seconds later to again cut the visitors’ deficit to two, Norwich iced its triumph with four combined free throws from Hogervorst and freshman Jesse Davis (Woodinville, Wash.) in the closing 14 seconds of action.

Senior Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) added 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the win for the Cadets, who received 13 points each from Davis and sophomore Dan Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.).  Senior Tommy Fitzgerald (Williston, Vt.) grabbed seven boards for Norwich, which shot 44 percent (24-54) from the field and canned seven treys while holding a 14-7 scoring edge at the foul line for the contest.

Clark finished with 14 points, four assists and a pair of steals in the setback for Mount Ida, which received 13 points, five boards and two assists from fellow senior John Oliver (North Babylon, N.Y.).  Cunningham collected 11 points (including a trio of three-pointers) as well for the Mustangs, who received eight points and nine caroms from freshman Jonathan Friberg (North Attleboro, Mass.) along with six points and seven rebounds from junior Dennis Ross (Portland, Maine).  Nunez chipped in with five points and nine boards as well for the visitors, who received six points from senior Joey DeFillippi (Bristol, Conn.) as well as three caroms from sophomore Mackenzie Purry (Jackson, N.J.).  Mount Ida shot 36 percent (23-64) from the floor and connected for 10 three-pointers on the night, as the Mustangs held a 40-29 rebounding advantage and scored 20 second chance points.

Mount Ida and Norwich will meet again in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference outing on Thursday evening at the Athletic Center that tips-off at 7:00 p.m.
