Strong Second Quarter Leads Mustangs to Comeback Win Over Vikings

NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida scored seven times in the second quarter after falling behind 4-1 and earned a come-from-behind 12-8 victory over Salem State University in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Freshman Ryan Trinque (East Greenwich, Mass.) scored his first two goals as a Mustang during the comeback spurt, and sophomore Mike Markevich (Westminster, Mass.) tallied five markers in the victory, including what would end up being the game-winning goal.

Senior Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) was strong in net, making 21 stops to earn his second win of the year.

Sophomore Alex Pearsons (Burlington, Mass.) led the Vikings (1-1) with four goals on a game-high 9 shots.

Pearsons completed his hat trick by the 11:47 mark of the second quarter, scoring on even strength, man-up, and man-down situations to give the visitors the three goal lead, as Salem State scored four straight times after Mount Ida's J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, Mass.) had opened the scoring five minutes in.

Trinque responded with his pair of goals, but Pearsons restored a two-goal lead for the Vikings with just under six minutes left in the half.

From there, the Mustangs (2-1) tallied six consecutive goals, five of them before the end of the quarter, where Markevich and freshman Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) each scored twice. Markevich's first goal put the Mustangs ahead 6-5, a lead that the Green and White would not relinquish.

Senior Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, Mass.) had three assists in the game for Mount Ida, two of them on goals in the second quarter, which ended with the Mustangs having grabbed an 8-5 advantage.

Markevich added a goal early in the third quarter before Salem State threatened to make a game of it, with three of the next four goals. Bobby Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) netted with 6:31 left in the third quarter and Andy Rice (Weymouth, Mass.) scored twice around a Markevich tally to pull the Vikings back to a 10-8 deficit.

Markevich, however, took a pass from Trinque with 9:54 left to play for his fifth goal of the game, and freshman Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) delivered the 12-8 final with his third goal of the year within the same minute.

For the Vikings, senior Frank Lento (Salem, Mass.) had three assists, which came on Salem State's first three goals of the day. Junior Nate Staples (Salem, Mass.) took the bulk of the draws and went 4-10, while Alex Fiorito (Newburyport, Mass.) grabbed a team-high ground balls an caused a pair of turnovers.

Junior Erik Berman (Montclair, N.J.) went 11-18 taking draws for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida scored on two of their seven man opportunities, while the Vikings were 1-6 with the extra player, and outhshot the Mustangs 39-30.

The Vikings split time at goalie, with sophomore Dominic Rovetto (Newbury, Mass.) making eight saves in the first half and junior Dylan Svenson (Billerica, Mass.) making three stops and allowing four goals after the break.

Mount Ida hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 1:00 pm meeting with the Corsairs.

Salem State (1-1) heads to North Shore Cup rival Gordon College on Saturday for a 1:00 pm game in Wenham against the Fighting Scots.
