NEWTON, Mass. – After suffering their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) loss of the year their last time out, Mount Ida College rebounded by using an 11-1 run to defeat Albertus Magnus 16-8 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Mount Ida improved to 6-4 (4-1 GNAC) and claimed the first victory in the history of the two programs, as Albertus is in its first year of varsity men's lacrosse.
Trailing 1-0 with 12:49 left in the first quarter, the Mustangs ripped off six straight goals to seize control of the game, and then outscored the Falcons 5-0 in the second stanza.
Senior Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, R.I.) had a monster day for the home team, tallying a hat trick while also serving up five assists in the victory.
Senior Zach Davis (Old Saybrook, Conn.) also notched a hat trick, while Albertus was led by three goals apiece by Mike Choiniere (Bethany, Conn.) and Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.).
Mount Ida forced 30 turnovers out of the Flacons, and were led defensively by senior Corey Gelbstein (Greenwich, Conn.), who caused six turnovers and grabbed six ground balls.
Buck took a feed from Choiniere to put Albertus on the board just over a minute into the game, but then six different Mustangs found the back of the net, including freshman Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.), who had four assists in the game, and Rosen, who opened the scoring at the 12:49 mark and then assisted on goals by freshmen Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) and Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.).
Coehlo then turned provider to Davis at the 6:00 minute mark, and scored himself from Hardy after Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) had scored his first of two goals on the day.
By the time Albertus Magnus freshman Austin Burns (Bethany, Conn.) scored at the end of the first period, the Mustangs had a 6-2 edge.
Cole Davis (Chester, N.H.) and Sean Royce (South Windsor, Conn.) got themselves on the score-sheet to open the second quarter, and Royce would add another goal late in the game to boost his tally to six on the year.
Davis, Berry and Rosen netted again before halftime, which showed 11-2 in favor of the Mustangs. J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, Mass.) scored his eighth goal of the year in the third quarter, where Rosen and Davis each marked again as well.
Choiniere opened the third quarter with an unassisted tally and would go on to score a pair of man-up goals for the Falcons in the fourth quarter, but it was too late to change the outcome of the game. Both teams found success with the extra attacker, with the visitors going 5-10, and Mount Ida scoring on both of their attempts.
Freshman Erik Berman (Montclair, N.J.) went 11-18 on face-offs and grabbed six ground balls, helping Mount Ida to a 39-25 edge in that department. Face-off man Justin Bennet (Fairfield, Conn.) won 13 of the 27 draws he took, grabbed six ground balls himself, and also dished out three assists for the Falcons (2-4, 1-3 GNAC).
Senior Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) made one stop and allowed just two goals for Mount Ida to earn the victory, while Tyler McElreath (Upton, Mass.) made six stops in the fourth quarter and Anthony Genualdo (Peabody, Mass.) made one save himself in a period of work.
Freshman Brandon Scicchitano (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped 13 shots while dropping to 1-4 on the season in goal for Albertus Magnus, who were outshot 48-35.
Mount Ida went 13-18 on clear attempts, while the Falcons managed 14 successful clears on 24 tries.
Mount Ida steps away from GNAC action on Wednesday night when they welcome Mitchell to town for a 6:30 pm game under the lights at Alumni Field.
Albertus Magnus hits the road in just two days' time, as they have a date with Becker on Monday night at 7:00 pm.
