Mustangs Unable to Grab Road Win Vs. Becker
LEICESTER, Mass.-- Mount Ida College came from three goals down at halftime and took a 7-6 lead, but could not hold off the Becker Hawks, who came back to claim a 9-8 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mustangs drop to 8-7 (5-4 GNAC) on the season, while the Hawks improve their record to 11-4 (7-3 GNAC). The win was Becker's first over Mount Ida in the program's nine year history, and it meant that Mount Ida would end the 2014 regular season without collecting a win away from Newton.
Becker got on the board 2:04 into the game when Myles White (Norwalk, Conn.) scored his 16th goal of the season. White helped put the Hawks in front 2-0 when he assisted David Deschenes (Gales Ferry, Conn.) on his 38th goal of the season with 8:59 remaining in the first quarter.
Mount Ida cut their deficit to 2-1 when Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tickled the twine with 5:22 remaining in the opening quarter.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until Becker scored three unanswered goals in 29 seconds, two coming from David Deschenes and one from Blake Boutiette (Burriville, R.I.), giving the Hawks a 5-2 advantage at the half.
The Hawks extended their lead to 6-2 when David Deschenes scored his third goal of the game on an assisted from John DeAngelis (Swampscott, Mass.).
The Mustangs finally ended their scoring drought 4:02 into the third quarter on a Zach Rosen (Greenwich, R.I.) goal. Mount Ida cut the score to 6-4 when Corey Gelbstein (Greenwich, Conn.) launched a clear attempt the length of the field, connecting with Mike Markevich (Westminster, Mass.), who netted his team leading 22nd goal of the season. Mount Ida continued their rally when Sullivan netted his second goal of the game with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the Becker lead to 6-5.
Mount Ida tied the game 1:53 into the fourth quarter when Zach Davis (Old Saybrook, Conn.) found Rosen just outside the right post on a man advantage opportunity, and took their first lead of the game with 10:23 remaining in regulation when Berry ripped a shot into the back of the Becker net from ten yards out with a man advantage.
With 8:31 remaining in the fourth, Becker tied the game at 7-7 when Boutiette spun through the Mustang defense for his 12th goal of the season. The Hawks took the lead back with 6:16 on the clock when White found Christopher Bell (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) in front of Mustangs net for his fifth goal of the season.
Mount Ida knotted the game at 8-8 when Rosen scored on a bounce shot with 3:32 remaining in the fourth, but a minute later, Becker netted the game winner when Deschenes scored on an underhand shot on an assisted from White, giving the Hawks a 9-8 victory.
Becker goalie Jeffrey Candee (Madison, Conn.) made ten saves, while Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass.) collected 15 stops in net for Mount Ida.
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, April 19 when they host Anna Maria on Senior Day beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Hawks have concluded their regular season and will await the final seedings for the GNAC Tournament, which begins next Wednesday, April 23, with Mount Ida having clinched a spot in the postseason as well.
