NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College scored ten goals in the second quarter to blow open their 2017 men's lacrosse season opener, beating Becker College 20-6 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) ran the Mustang offense, dishing out five assists while scoring four goals of his own. Shane Flaherty (Halifax, Mass.) and Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) each scored a hat trick as well for Mount Ida (1-0), and Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) added two goals and two assists and Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) scored four times and handed out an assist.
Ayvay Chaganty (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored twice for Becker, and Daniel Johnson (Plymouth, Mass.) had a goal and two assists, but the Hawks were outshot 55-26 and fell to 0-1 on the season.
Mount Ida scored six unanswered goals after Becker took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Blake Gordon (East Greenbush, N.Y.) with thirty-two seconds left in a first quarter that looked like it would end scoreless.
The first quarter actually ended 1-1, as Ton notched his first goal of the year with just five seconds to play, and Ton scored again during Mount Ida's barrage of goals to open the second quarter.
Hardy scored a hat trick within the final 4:05 of the second quarter, ending the half with two straight goals, including one at the final tick of the clock, giving Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) his second assist of the game.
The Mustang's advantage extended into the ground balls category (53-30), as they forced 24 Becker turnovers. Alex Veloukas (Salem, Mass.) had five caused turnovers, while Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.) had nine ground balls and was 21-24 from the face-off dot, as Mount Ida won all but five of the 27 draws.
Bryan Parsons (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had five caused turnovers and grabbed eight ground balls for Becker.
Between the pipes, junior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made eight stops in playing the first 52:31 for Mount Ida.
Sophomore Michael Krch (Justice, Ill.) saw the first three quarters of action in the Becker goal, making 12 saves.
The Mustangs will play their first road game of the year on Saturday afternoon when they head to New England College for a 1:00 pm contest.
Becker will play at another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) team with a trip to Rivier this Saturday at 1:00 pm as well.
