Mustangs Improve on Hot Start to the Season

WENHAM, Mass. -- Mount Ida College men's lacrosse continued their perfect start to the 2017 season, as they used a lengthy run of goals in the first and second half to collect a 15-11 victory over Gordon College on a snowy Friday at the Brigham Athletic Conference.

Mount Ida improves to 4-0 this season, which is its best start in program history. The Mustangs will have another chance to extend that streak on Wednesday with another trip to the North Shore to take on Salem State. Gordon (2-2) will hope to rebound at Becker on the same day for a 1 p.m. start.

The Fighting Scots put their best foot forward at the start with a pair of quick goals. Thor Rasmussen (Fairfax, Va.) was full steam ahead for an unassisted goal in the second minute of regulation. Sophomore Nick Tozier (Winston Salem, N.C.) scored his third of the season on a nice pass from Austin Early (Palmyra, Va.) to make it 2-0 Gordon just three minutes in.

Mount Ida evened the score in under a minute with goals from Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) and Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Coehlo also earned the assist on Hardy's score.

The game of runs continued as Nick Palandjian (Belmont, Mass.) scored the third goal in under a minute, directly off a face-off win for Billy Biegun (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). Palandjian added a second goal with 4:29 to play on a quick feed from Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) to make it 4-2.

Not to be outdone, Mount Ida answered back with another two-goal run. With 2:54 to go, Wyatt Sullivan finished off a pass from Coehlo before Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.) evened the game at four just 24 seconds later.

Gordon's Tozier put home his second of the game at the 10-minute mark in the second quarter to reclaim the lead for the Scots, but it was all Mustangs for the remainder. Hardy scored right off of the next faceoff to tie the game at five to spark a run. Da'Zhona Johnston (Southhampton, Bermuda) gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game with 8:24 to go. Jon Berry (Chichester, N.H.) made it a two-goal game before Johnston added his second right before intermission, capping off a four-goal run. The Mustangs led 8-5 at the half.

The Scots committed to chipping away at the deficit little by little in the third quarter. Palandjian finished off yet another hat trick with an unassisted goal before Tozier did the same a minute later. Manganiello finished off the flurry of scoring for the Scots with another unassisted goal with 7:50 to go in the period.

As they had for much of the game, Mount Ida found instant offense in transition off of the restarts. Gordon's momentum didn't last for long as Matt Hoffman (Brewster, N.Y.) received a quick pass from Ryan Trinque (E. Greenwich, R.I.) directly off the face-off following Manganiello's goal. Hardy also added another goal before the third quarter ended to put Gordon back in a two-goal hole.

The Mustangs continued their second 4-0 run of the game well into the fourth quarter with strikes from Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) and Coehlo to sink the Scots even deeper.

Gordon was able to get back within three goals on two separate occasions, only for the Mustangs to answer on the next possession and regain control. Mount Ida led 15-10 with a few minutes remaining thanks to Alex Zito's (Andover, Conn.) work in the circle. Palandjian added a fourth goal in the closing minutes.

Shots were fairly even with the Mustangs holding a slight 42-41 edge, but a 48-36 advantage on 50-50 balls gave them more possession in the middle stages of the game. Mount Ida also doubled up the Scots on restarts (20-10) and controlled the ball for much of the fourth to make it harder for Gordon to stage a comeback.

Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) earned his fourth consecutive win with 14 saves in net. Gordon's Jay Gallipo (Dover, N.H.) had a solid game with 11 saves, but took the loss.
