Mustangs Best Falcons in GNAC Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mount Ida College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a seven goal lead after one period on their way to a 22-11 win over Albertus Magnus in the Mustang's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener on Tuesday afternoon at Celentano Field.

The Mustangs improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC, while the Falcons have the reverse record on the year and are now 0-2 in conference play.

Mount Ida never trailed, leading 7-0 before the hosts got on the board and 9-2 at the end of the first period. Matt Hoffman (Brewster, N.Y.) scored two goals in the opening period, and Wyatt Sullivan (Arlington, Mass.) scored the first of his four goals to make it 5-0 at the 9:49 mark of the quarter.

Hoffman would go on to tally a hat trick and two assists for a five point day, while Sullivan also had two helpers, Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Da'Zhon Johnston (Southhampton, Bermuda) had two goals and two assists.

Junior Alex Zito (Andover, Conn.) was 19-25 on face-offs and tied a Mount Ida single-game record with 19 ground balls, helping the Mustangs to a 64-48 edge in that category.

Senior attack Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) scored five goals for Albertus Magnus, and he cut the hosts deficit to 7-2 with 4:03 to play in the first quarter, but Mount Ida pumped up their advantage with the final two goals of the quarter, from Ryan Trinque (E. Greenwich, R.I.) and Shane Flaherty (Halifax, Mass.), and then the first seven goals of the second quarter, including three by Sullivan and the first of two by Corey Eugster (Upton, Mass.).

Freshman midfielder Max Serra (Nashua, N.H.) scored his first collegiate goal, and senior Cody Burdick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored his second goal in his last three games.

Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made one save and allowed just two goals in twenty minutes of action. He was spelled by Allen Stein (Levittown, N.Y.), who made two stops, and Joseph Varagnolo (Centereach, N.Y.), who stopped seven shots.

Mount Ida hosts Lasell College on Thursday at 4:00 pm in a game that was resecheduled from last Saturday.

Albertus heads this way as well with a trip to Lasell at 2:30 pm on Saturday afternoon.
