Mustangs Earn Pair of Non-Conference Wins in Home Tri-Match

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team opened a non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Lesley University and finished the day by beating Pratt Institute 3-1 to win both of their matches Saturday afternoon at Mount Ida Athletic Center.

Game 1: Mount Ida 3, Lesley 0 

Mount Ida (5-11) collected their second victory over Lesley this year, following up a 3-1 victory on January 29th in Cambridge with a sweep of the Lynx at Mount Ida Athletic Center. 

The Mustangs started the match strong with a 25-14 victory in the first set, then took a 10-0 lead en route to a 25-18 second set win. The Lynx, after falling behind 17-10 in the third set, went on a 5-0 run to pull within two points, but Mount Ida did enough to hold on for the 25-20 victory. 

Junior James Ames (West Hartford, Conn.) paced the Mustangs with 16 kills and four service aces., while classmate Dennis Miranda (Havana, Cuba) had nine kills in the victory. 

Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) piled up 28 assists and recorded six digs for the Mustangs, who saw both Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Andrew Shaw (Anaheim, Calif.) with double-digit digs. Griffenkranz had a game-high 15 digs, while Shaw picked up 10 balls. 

Lesley was paced by five kills from sophomore Tyler Burns (Newtown, Pa.) and 11 assists from sophomore setter Mitchell Ulacco (Winchester, Mass.). 

Junior Jess Cherry (Lancaster, Pa.) led the way defensively for the Lynx with nine digs, and he and Burns each served one of Lesley's two aces. 

Game 3: Mount Ida 3, Pratt 1 

The Cannoneers took the first set 28-26 but Mount Ida collected themselves and went on to win by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-15. 

Ames led the Mustangs again, racking up 18 kills, but it wasn't enough to lead all players, as Pratt sophomore David Cutler (Calabasas, Calif.) racked up 19 kills and also a game-high 20 digs. 

Ames was helped by Miranda, who piled up 15 kills and also led the team with 14 digs, and Kalyn Smithson (Vilseck, Germany), who had 11 kills. Junior Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) assisted on 31 points before giving way to junior Michael McCullough (Southborough, Mass.), who had eight assists and also ten digs. 

Junior Chris Fantin (Kearny, N.J.) put up 15 assists for Pratt, who also saw senior Alex Arsovski (Oak Park, Ill.) pick up four kills and 11 digs. 

Game 2: Lesley 3, Pratt 2 

In the middle match of the day, Lesley picked up their first win of the season by coming back from a 2-0 deficit and defeating Pratt in five sets. Burns put up 25 kills to lead all players and Ulacco posted 51 assists as the Lynx won by scores of 21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17, and 15-12.

Burns and Cherry lead the way with 12 digs apiece, and Cherry also picked up four service aces to go along with 11 kills. Jacob DiDomenico (N. Providence, R.I.) also turned in double-digits with ten kills.

Cutler paced the Cannoneers with 15 kills, and Matthew Valentine and Connan Moody each racked up eight kills. Cutler also led all players with 16 digs, tied with C. Jay Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) of the Lynx.

Fantin ran the offense with 17 assists, aided by Ryan, who set up 13 points and served a team-high three aces.

The Mustangs (5-11) will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday when they host Albertus Magnus at Mount Ida Athletic Center at 6:00 pm.

Lesley (1-11) dips back into their New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) schedule the same night when they travel to Daniel Webster an hour later.

Pratt (3-4) continues their non-conference work on March 6th with a home game against Sarah Lawrence at 7:00 pm.
