Men's Volleyball Set Back in Boston Tri-Match Sweep

BOSTON, Mass. -- Mount Ida College was swept in a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's volleyball contests during a tri-match in Boston Saturday against Emerson and host Emmanuel.

The Mustangs fall to 12-16 overall and 1-10 in the GNAC, and will head to Lasell on April 4th for a 7:00 pm conference match against the Lasers.

Game 1: Emerson 3, Mount Ida 0

The Lions won by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-23 as they would sweep their two contests on the afternoon

Nate Gyampo (Providence, R.I.) led the Mustangs with nine kills, while Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) put up 25 assists.

Sophomore Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) had eight kills and eight digs, but Mount Ida missed16 serves and were aced 12 times, helping Emerson to the victory despite the Lions hitting just .091 to Mount Ida's .188.

Mark Piorkowski led the Lions with 13 kills and had eight digs, two service aces and two block assists.

Game 2: Emmanuel 3, Mount Ida 0

The Saints hit over .200 in each of the three sets, while Mount Ida committed 22 hitting errors, helping Emmanuel to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-11 victory.

Southworth led all Mustangs with five kills and Nelson Leadbetter (Athol, Mass.) had a team-high seven digs. Southworth also had Mount Ida's only two service aces of the match.

Erik English paced the Saints with seven kills, eight digs and two service aces, and Seamus McDonagh had 23 assists and was in on two bkocks.

Alex Silva had four aces, three kills and three blocks as Emmanuel salvaged a split on the day.
