FINAL:              MOUNT IDA 12, DEAN 2 (5 INNINGS)

NEWTON, Mass. --  Sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) rapped out three hits, while freshman Shelby Nolan (Ansonia, Conn.) drove in three runs to lead Mount Ida to a 12-2 non-league college softball victory over Dean in a five inning affair played Tuesday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field.

After the two teams traded first inning runs, the host Mustangs (7-14) took control of the contest with a five-run second inning rally highlighted by Benson’s RBI single and Nolan’s sacrifice fly, as Mount Ida also took advantage of a two-run error and a fielder’s choice.  The visiting Bulldogs (4-16) got a run back in the top of the third when sophomore Karissa Menzinger (Centereach, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but the hosts responded with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame on Nolan’s two-run double before icing their triumph with a four-run fourth inning outburst highlighted by freshman Katie Jaroneczyk’s (Naugatuck, Conn.) two-run single, a bases loaded walk to freshman Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) and junior Kristina Stella’s (Revere, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

Stella added two hits as part of a nine-hit attack for the Mustangs, who received their first run of the day on a two-out single off the bat of senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the first inning.  Freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) took care of matters on the mound for Mount Ida, as she scattered seven hits and struck out five to earn her third victory of the season.  Sophomore Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Vega Alta, P.R.) collected two hits in the setback for Dean, as Menzinger (who singled in the first run of the day) allowed six earned runs and fanned a pair in going the distance inside the circle for the Bulldogs.

Mount Ida hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Dean heads into Boston on Saturday morning to square off with Wheelock in a New England Collegiate Conference twinbill that begins at 11:00 a.m.
