GAME #2 FINAL:          MOUNT IDA 4, NORWICH 3

NEWTON, Mass. --  Freshman Caitlin Hogan’s (Derry, N.H.) infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning plated the winning run to lift Mount Ida to a 4-3 nightcap victory over Norwich and a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field.  The visiting Cadets received a complete-game five-hitter from junior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) to notch a 4-1 triumph in the opener.

The host Mustangs (15-23, 9-14 GNAC) overcame a 3-0 second inning deficit in the nightcap by plating a pair in the bottom of that frame on junior Jenni Jackson’s (Marlboro, Mass.) two-run double, and that score held up until the sixth when Mount Ida evened matters on a throwing error.  Singles by freshman Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) and sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) put the eventual winning run at second with one out in the seventh for the Mustangs, and freshman pinch runner Vanessa Puopolo (Revere, Mass.) came around to score on Hogan’s single to second base that gave the hosts their walk-off victory.

Hogan rapped out two of Mount Ida’s night hits in the second contest in support of freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.), who allowed a pair of earned runs and fanned five to pick up her seventh win of the season inside the circle for the Mustangs.  Norwich (10-16, 8-14 GNAC) had taken its early with a run in its first at-bat on an error and two more in the second on sophomore Makenna Wade’s (Pensacola, Fla.) two-run double, as the Cadets received two hits off the bat of freshman Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.) as part of a seven-hit attack.  Senior Sarah Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) went the distance inside the circle for the visitors in the nightcap, as she allowed three earned runs and struck out three.

Norwich took a 2-0 lead in its first at-bat of the opener on a pair of errors, and the Cadets extended that margin to 4-0 in the sixth on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Katie Reid (Gold Canyon, Ariz.).  Mount Ida got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a throwing error but could get no closer, as Wade collected two of the visitors’ six hits in their triumph.  Oliver scattered five hits and recorded three strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season in the lid-lifter for Norwich, as Smith picked up two of those safeties in the setback for Mount Ida.  Freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) allowed just one earned run and fanned three inside the circle for the Mustangs, who are tied in the loss column for the eighth and final conference playoff spot with both Norwich and Lasell entering the final days of the regular season.

Mount Ida heads to Standish, Maine on Monday afternoon to complete a halted Great Northeast Athletic Conference game with Saint Joseph’s (Maine) that was suspended on Friday afternoon due to rain, while Norwich travels to Weston, Mass. on Monday afternoon to square off with Regis in a GNAC twinbill that begins at 4:00 p.m.
