GAME #1 FINAL: MOUNT IDA 5, REGIS 2
GAME #2 FINAL: MOUNT IDA 2, REGIS 1
WESTON, Mass. -- Freshman Savannah Neilan’s (Somerset, Mass.) RBI single in the top of the sixth inning plated the game-winning run and lifted Mount Ida to a 2-1 nightcap victory over Regis to complete a sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at Regis Field. Senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) belted her third homer of the spring and added a run-scoring double to lead the Mustangs to a 5-2 triumph in the opening game of the twinbill.
The visiting Mustangs (11-14, 6-6 GNAC), who claimed their fifth straight win with the sweep, grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead in the lid-lifter on Microulis’s solo shot to left and extended that margin to 3-0 in the third on an error and an RBI double off the bat of freshman Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.). The host Pride (4-14, 0-10 GNAC) closed back to within one on sophomore Ellery Rasmussen’s (Kingston, N.H.) two-run double in the bottom of the frame, but back-to-back RBI two-baggers off the bats of Microulis and freshman Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) in the top of the fifth provided a pair of insurance tallies for Mount Ida and closed out the scoring in the opener.
Junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.) joined Microulis with two hits as part of a six-hit attack in the first contest for the Mustangs, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) went the distance inside the circle and struck out four to earn her fourth win of the season for Mount Ida. Rasmussen accounted for two of Regis’s six hits in the lid-lifter, as sophomore Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) allowed two earned runs and fanned eight to suffer the setback for the Pride.
Mount Ida struck first in the nightcap when freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) plated Hogan with an RBI single in the visitors’ initial at-bat, but Regis evened matters in the bottom of the second on freshman Emma Kelly’s (Lynnfield, Mass.) two-out run-scoring single. That score held up until the top of the sixth when Hogan singled, stole second and scored on Neilan’s two-out single up the middle, and Smith stranded the potential tying tally in both the sixth and seventh frames to earn her fifth win of the spring inside the circle while fanning three along the way.
Hogan and Neilan each had two hits as part of a second straight six hit effort in the nightcap for Mount Ida, as Smith limited Regis to four singles in the second contest. McLellan went the distance once again in suffering the setback inside the circle for the Pride, as she struck out six to finish with 14 total punchouts on the afternoon.
Both Mount Ida and Regis have already postponed their respective GNAC doubleheaders on Sunday afternoon with Lasell and Emmanuel, as the Mustangs are set to return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a trip into Boston to square off with Wentworth in a non-league twinbill beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Pride will entertain Rivier in a GNAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Regis Field that begins at 5:00 p.m.
