GAME #1 FINAL:          MOUNT IDA 5, RIVIER 1

GAME #2 FINAL:          RIVIER 8, MOUNT IDA 0 (5 INNINGS)

NASHUA, N.H. --  Freshman Madeline Smith (San Diego, Calif.) tossed a complete-game one-hitter and struck out six to lift Mount Ida to a 5-1 opening game victory and a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Rivier Wednesday evening at Raider Diamond, as the host Raiders used a pair of three-run rallies to notch an 8-0 triumph in the nightcap.

The visiting Mustangs (4-12, 2-4 GNAC) grabbed a 2-0 third inning lead in the opener on an RBI triple by freshman Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.) that was followed by a run-scoring single from fellow freshman Savannah Neilan (Somerset, Mass.), but the Raiders (8-12, 3-3 GNAC) got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a passed ball.  Mount Ida extended its edge to 4-1 in the fifth on Neilan’s two-run triple and added an insurance tally in the sixth on freshman Shelby Nolan’s (Ansonia, Conn.) RBI single, and Smith took care of the rest inside the circle for the visitors, as she allowed a fourth inning infield single and worked around a pair of walks to pick up her second victory of the season.

Hogan, Neilan, Nolan and senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) each had two hits as part of an 11-hit attack in the opener for the Mustangs, while junior Mikayla Ramsdell (Salem, N.H.) collected the lone hit of the lid-lifter for Rivier.  Freshman Kellie Kennedy (Hudson, N.H.) allowed three earned runs and fanned six over 5 2/3 frames to suffer the setback for the hosts.

The Raiders plated single runs in their first two at-bats of the nightcap on an error and a suicide squeeze by freshman Katie Welch (Wilmington, Mass.), and Rivier broke things open with a pair of three-run rallies in the third and fourth innings of action.  Sophomore Taylor Rowsell (Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Jess Silva (Tewksbury, Mass.) collected back-to-back RBI triples as part of the third inning uprising for the hosts, who closed out the scoring in the fourth on a two-run single from sophomore Tayla LeGrand (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Rowsell’s RBI single.

LeGrand and freshman Julia Dailey (Dracut, Mass.) each rapped out two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the second game for the Raiders, as Rowsell helped her own cause with two hits at the plate while scattering four inside the circle and recording three strikeouts to pick up her third win of the season for Rivier.  Microulis, junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.), sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) and freshman Katie Jaroneczyk (Naugatuck, Conn.) collected hits in the setback for Mount Ida, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) allowed three earned runs and fanned two over three innings of work inside the circle for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida hosts Anna Maria in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the Mount Ida Softball Field beginning at Noon, while Rivier entertains Albertus Magnus in a GNAC twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Raider Diamond that begins at 1:00 p.m.
