FINAL: SAINT JOSEPH’S (MAINE) 5, MOUNT IDA 4
STANDISH, Maine -- Junior Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine) scored the winning run on a passed ball with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Saint Joseph’s (Maine) used a four-run rally in its final at-bat to post a 5-4 Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball victory over Mount Ida in the opening game of a scheduled league doubleheader Friday afternoon at Bailey Field. The second contest was suspended after two innings of play due to rain with the host Monks leading 1-0, as that game will be resumed later this weekend.
Saint Joseph’s (15-16, 11-8 GNAC) rallied after the visiting Mustangs (14-22, 8-13 GNAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat on an RBI double by senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) that was followed by a two-run double off the bat of junior Kelsey Weston (Hampstead, N.H.). Freshman Jill Skalski’s (Cranford, N.J.) RBI double in the top of the second extended Mount Ida’s advantage to 4-0, but the Monks got a run back in the fourth on sophomore Kaylee Burns’s (Saco, Maine) RBI single before staging their late rally with one out in the seventh. Junior Katie Chadbourne (Jaffrey, N.H.) plated the hosts’ second run with an RBI single before scoring on an error to cut the hosts’ deficit to one, back-to-back passed balls enabled both junior Meghan Elliott (Mendon, Mass.) and Bailey to score and complete Saint Joseph’s comeback.
Chadbourne and Bailey each had two hits as part of an eight-hit attack in the win for the Monks, as sophomore Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) worked a scoreless seventh to pick up her second victory of the season in relief of junior Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine), who struck out three over the first six innings. Microulis rapped out three doubles as part of a 10-hit attack in the setback for Mount Ida, as Skalski added a pair of two-baggers while recording three hits as well for the visitors. Sophomore Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) collected two hits for the Mustangs, as freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) suffered the setback despite not allowing an earned run in relief of freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.), who had scattered four hits and fanned a pair over the first five frames.
Mount Ida hosts Norwich in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field beginning at Noon, while Saint Joseph’s hosts Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a GNAC twinbill on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Field that also begins at Noon.
