GAME #1 FINAL: URSINUS 5, MOUNT IDA 2
GAME #2 FINAL: NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 8, MOUNT IDA 0 (5 INNINGS)
CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Mount Ida softball team wrapped up its Southern swing with a pair of non-league setbacks to Ursinus (5-2) and New England College (8-0 in five innings) in contests played at The Spring Games Wednesday afternoon at Hancock Park.
Ursinus (3-3) took a 2-0 third inning lead in the opener on an error and an RBI single off the bat of junior Faith Carson (Bethlehem, Pa.), but the Mustangs (2-6) evened matters in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring groundout by freshman Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) and an RBI single by senior Hayley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.). The Bears took the lead for good in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles off the bats of junior Samantha Garritano (Spring City, Pa.) and freshman Morgan Comfort (Hamilton, N.J.), and Ursinus tacked on an insurance tally in the sixth on an error to account for the final score.
Garritano and junior Sammi Donato (Havertown, Pa.) each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the opener for Ursinus, as senior Kaitlyn Willis (Perryville, Md.) went the distance inside the circle for the Bears and recorded a pair of strikeouts to earn her first victory of the spring. Freshman Michelle Cilley (Dracut, Mass.) rapped out two of Mount Ida’s seven hits in the lid-lifter, as Smith allowed just one earned run and fanned one to suffer the setback inside the circle for the Mustangs.
New England College (2-6) plated the only run it would need in its opening at-bat of the nightcap on junior Gabriella Marcheschi’s (St. James, N.Y.) RBI single, and the Pilgrims extended that margin to 2-0 in the second on a fielder’s choice before plating a pair in the fourth on sophomore Chanel Welch’s (Seabrook, N.H.) run-scoring groundout and Marcheschi’s second RBI single of the contest. New England College iced its triumph with a four-run fifth inning rally, as a two-run single by senior Rachel Kerrigan (Hyde Park, Mass.) and a Welch sacrifice fly were followed by a fielding error that ended the game.
Marcheschi, Kerrigan and freshman Rachel Senechal (Killingworth, Conn.) and Aibhlin O’Connor (Biddeford, Maine) each had two hits as part of an 11-hit attack for the Pilgrims in support of freshman Taylor Barbour (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who scattered three hits and struck out three to pick up her first collegiate victory inside the circle. Junior Jenni Jackson (Marlboro, Mass.), along with freshmen Katie Jaroneczyk (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Nikolette Papadopoulos (Coventry, Conn.), collected hits in the nightcap setback for Mount Ida, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded a pair of strikeouts in going the distance inside the circle for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida opens its Northern schedule on Saturday, March 17th by heading into Boston to take on Wentworth in a non-league doubleheader that begins at Noon.
