The honors continue to come in for Mount Ida sophomore women’s basketball forward Valerie Martin, as she was one of five players named to the National Team of the Week for her efforts in a pair of Mustang victories last week.  Martin becomes the first student-athlete in school history to earn the weekly national recognition and is one of two players from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference to be named to this week’s squad.

A native of Derry, N.H. and a graduate of Pinkerton Academy, Martin averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and 3.5 assists on the week, including a career-high 28 points, 15 boards, four assists and a school-record tying 13-of-13 effort from the foul line in a 94-80 triumph over Fitchburg State.  Valerie added 18 points, nine caroms and six steals in a 78-54 win over Mount Holyoke, and she shot 62 percent (16-26) from the field in the two outings.

Martin, who was also named to the New England Women’s Basketball Association’s weekly honor roll earlier in the week, leads Mount Ida in scoring (16.8 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg) and steals (4.0 spg) and is shooting 87 percent (47-54) at the charity stripe after the first semester of play, as she has helped lead third year Head Coach Katie Greene’s squad to the best start (6-2) in the program’s 19-year NCAA varsity history.

Martin was joined on this week’s Team of the Week by Suffolk’s Georgia Bourikas, Guilford’s Lauren Ramsey, Averett’s Samm Chandler and St. Joseph’s (N.Y.) Andrea Iavarone.

The Mustangs resume play on Tuesday, January 2nd with a non-league contest at Becker that tips-off at 7:00 pm EST.
