Mustangs Stifled by Colonels

NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's lacrosse team dropped their second straight game to begin the 2014 campaign by a final score of 19-4 to the Colonels of Curry College.  With the win, Curry moves to 1-1 (0-0, CCC) on the young season while Mount Ida drops to 0-2 (0-0, GNAC).

Mustang junior attack Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) tallied the first goal of the game off an assist from Kaitlyn Affhauser (Chesire, Mass.) at the 4:44 mark to give Mount Ida the early 1-0 advantage; the goal was Bowen's first of the young season.  Curry would then score six consecutive goals in the next eleven minutes of the contest taking a commanding 6-1 lead.  Senior Kaitlin Cloutier (Montpelier, Vt.) scored two free position goals as well as one from fellow senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Ct.) Carey and Alli Schoff, a freshman midfielder, each netted unassisted goals while teammate Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) tallied her first marker of the game of the stick of Cloutier.  Senior Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, N.Y.) cut into the hosts advantage by tallying a free position goal of her own making the score 6-2.  With two minutes remaining in the first stanza, the Colonels were able to muster three more goals, while Mount Ida recorded one.  Carey would earn another free position tally while senior Deanna Monfredo (West Islip, N.Y.) scored back to back goals; Affhauser would net her first marker of the game with just four seconds remaining in the half.

The Colonels outscored the Mustangs 10-1 in the final period.  All ten goals were unanswered before Bowen finished the scoring for the Mustangs with the final goal of the game.  Curry's Carey had two more tallies and another assist for eight points to lead all scorers.  Senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted two goals and had three assists for five points.  Freshman Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) tallied two goals and chipped in with an assist and Monfredo scored another as they both earned three points.  Three Colonels finished with two points on the day with sophomore Emma Bolton (Mahwah, N.J.) netting one and helping on one and Schoff tallying her second of the day.  Freshman Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) finished the night with a score of her own.

Curry had four freshmen earn their first collegiate goal.  Carey led all scorers with eight points on six goals and two assists.  Brickey finished with five points while also causing 11 turnovers and winning 11 out of her team's 19 draw controls.  Affhauser led Mount Ida with two points on one goal and an assist.

Curry outshot Mount Ida 37-11 on the afternoon.  On draw, the Colonels won up 19 and the Mustangs 6.

Sophomore Anne Douglas (Manchester, N.H.) made five saves in her 60:00 minutes of play in net for the Colonel's in the win.  Junior goaltender Samantha Levitt (Wayland, Mass.) made 11 saves in goal for the Mustangs in the loss.

Curry will host Lasell College on Thursday, March 6th with game time slated for 4:00 while Mount Ida will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Thursday to battle the Corsairs with that game set to begin at 4:00.
