Norwich Stymies Mount Ida, Takes GNAC Tilt, 15-9

NEWTON, Mass. – In just their second game of the season, the Norwich University women's lacrosse team defeated Mount Ida College by a final score of 15-9.  With the victory, Norwich improves to 1-1 (1-1 GNAC) while Mount Ida drops to 2-8 (0-5 GNAC).

Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Me.) and Meaghan Albert (Lanesborough, Mass.) led the way for the cadets tallying four goals each on the afternoon.  Molly Sheppard (Brookhaven, N.Y.) tallied a team high four goals for the Mustangs in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt.

Fitzpatrick gave the Cadets the early 1-0 lead just 0:19 seconds into the game before Sheppard marched down the field and evened things up at 1-1 at the 29:10 mark.  Cadet Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.) and Sheppard exchanged back to back goals while staying even at 2-2. 

Norwich then took control of the contest by scoring six straight goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead.  Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) tallied two markers during the surge while teammates Fitzpatrick, Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.), Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Albert all notched goals in the scoring spree.   Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) scored her first of two goals in the contest just before halftime to cut into the visitors lead at 8-3.

Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) scored an unassisted marker just over a minute and a half into the second stanza to cut the Norwich lead in half, 8-4.

Once again, the Cadets would go on a fierce scoring spree by tallying seven consecutive goals to improve their lead to 15-4.  During the streak, Fitzpatrick tallied two goals while Albert notched a hat trick, and Gokey tallied her third goal of the season.

The Mustangs would not back down easily as they themselves scored five consecutive goals down the stretch to come within six.  Bowen tallied her 19th goal of the season while Sheppard notched her team leading 28th and 29th markers of the year, before Beaulieu and Nicole Batakis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded the final two goals of the contest.

Junior Sammy Levitt (Wayland, Mass.) took the loss for the Mustangs with Rebecca Horgan (Topsfield, Mass.) taking the win for Norwich. 

Norwich outshot Mount Ida 33 to 17 while putting 20 of those on goal.  Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded five ground balls for Mount Ida as they had the slight edge over Norwich, 22-18.

Mount Ida will be back in GNAC action on Tuesday, April 1st at 4:00 pm when they travel to Paxton, Massachusetts to take on Anna Maria College.  Norwich will also be in GNAC action at 7:00 pm on Tuesday night when they are entertained by Simmons College.
