NEWTON, Mass. – The seven game winning streak for Mount Ida College's women's lacrosse team came to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Mustangs fell 12-8 to visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a battle of teams unbeaten in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
The program record winning streak has Mount Ida still with an impressive 10-2 record and they are now 3-1 in GNAC play.
Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) had five goals and six points, along with a team-high six draw controls, while Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) and Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine) scored four goals apiece for the Monks, who improve to 6-2 (3-0 GNAC).
Saint Joseph's put the pressure on Mount Ida early, scoring four straight goals after Nicole Pavao (Peabody, Mass.) had put the Mustangs up 1-0. Caiazzo tied the game at 21:45, and Samantha Medlin (Kingston, Mass.) scored the first of two goals in the half before Wilson netted a brace of unassisted goals.
With the first three goals of the second half, two of them by Caiazzo, Saint Joseph's built a 9-2 advantage before the Mustangs found their groove. Two goals from Emily McConnell (Dracut, Mass.) sandwiched around a tally by Kelly cut the deficit to just four, but the Monks responded with a run of their own.
Wilson assisted on a Caiazzo tally and then scored twice herself to put the game out of reach, despite Kelly netting the final three goals of the game to build her tally to 54 on the season.
Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made 13 saves, as Mount Ida outshot their opponents 30-24.
For the Mustangs, Jess Henry (Wilbraham, Mass.) made four saves in just over a half of action, and Eleanor Garvey (Elkridge, Md.) made three saves in relief.
Both teams continue GNAC play on Saturday. The Mustangs host Albertus Magnus at 12:00 pm, while Saint Joseph's travels back to Boston for an 11:00 AM game against Simmons.
