NEWTON, Mass. -- Freshman Briana Couture’s (South Hadley, Mass.) goal with 5:07 remaining snapped a 15-15 tie and lifted Colby-Sawyer to an 18-16 non-league college women’s lacrosse victory over Mount Ida Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The visiting Chargers (2-1) jumped out to a 6-1 advantage just 8:30 into action on the strength of two goals from senior Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.), but the host Mustangs (1-1) netted six of the contest’s next eight tallies to close back to within one (8-7) on junior Brooke Scahill’s (Gales Ferry, Conn.) marker with 6:41 to play in the half. Lavigne’s fourth goal of the half extended Colby-Sawyer’s edge to two (9-7) at the break, and the Chargers scored four unanswered tallies in the opening 7:48 after intermission to take a 13-7 edge with just under 22 minutes remaining on Lavigne’s man-up marker.
Mount Ida responded with three unanswered goals in less than three minutes to climb back to within three (13-10) on freshman Jordyn Ringuette’s (Colchester, Conn.) tally, and after the visitors regained a five-goal lead on Couture’s marker with 13:44 to play, the Mustangs netted five unanswered goals in just under eight minutes to even matters at 15 on senior Hayley Napier’s (Fairhaven, Mass.) tally with 5:45 remaining. The hosts had a chance to take the lead on the ensuing possession but were denied on a free position shot, and Couture capitalized with her third goal of the day to give Colby-Sawyer the lead for good. Lavigne and junior Brittany Ireland (Amherst, N.H.) added a pair of insurance markers for the visitors in a 37 second span, as Scahill’s fifth goal of the afternoon enabled Mount Ida to climb back to within two and account for the final margin.
Lavigne finished with six goals and an assist for seven points in the win for Colby-Sawyer, which received a nine-point performance (five goals, four assists) from Ireland to go with Couture’s hat trick. Junior Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) added a pair of markers and two assists as well for the Chargers, who received two tallies off the stick of senior Molly Mulcahy (Nashua, N.H.).
Scahill added a pair of assists to go with her five goal output to finish with seven points in the setback for Mount Ida, which received five goals from Ringuette. Junior Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) amassed nine total points on four markers and five helpers for the Mustangs, who received a goal off the stick of senior Emily McConnell (Dracut, Mass.).

The Mustangs outshot the Chargers by a 37-31 margin overall (33-27 on goal), but the visitors held a 19-17 edge in draw controls for the contest.
