2010 Preview

Second year Head Coach Peri Steere and the Mount Ida College women’s lacrosse program will venture into their inaugural varsity season in 2010 as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with their first collegiate contest approaching March 11th, 2010 against hosting Anna Maria College in non-conference play.

After one year as a club sport, the Mustangs and coach Steere have a positive outlook as they embark on their first ever varsity season.  “I’m looking into the season positively,” said Steere.  “If you look at the competition (in the GNAC) our roster sizes and strength of schedules are about the same.  I feel that we are entering the GNAC equal with our opponents.”

Steere and her program participated in their first ever live action in a scrimmage against Wheaton College, Mount Holyoke College, and the Boston Women’s Lacrosse League (post-collegiate players) to test their skills before heading to Paxton, Massachusetts to face the AmCats next week.

“I thought we played well against some very good competition,” said Steere.  “I feel good about our first game on Thursday because Anna Maria is only a second year program so they’re not far with some beginners just like us.”

Coach Steere feels her players are ready for competition after a long awaited start after a full year of club last season.  “I think we’re in a good place,” said Steere.  “We’ve been practicing since January 25th, six days a week, getting prepared.  It’s going to be a full effort and we’ll need everyone to contribute for a successful season.”

Although the Mustangs are in their first full varsity season in program history, Head Coach Steere has a positive outlook on 2010.  “Initially I thought it was just a building year but looking at our talent and athleticism I think we could definitely be successful,” said Steere.  “Just looking at our conference schedule I think we have the possibility to be contenders.  I think we’ll be beat some of the lower level team s but we’ll have our struggles against the Norwich and Emerson type teams in the GNAC.”

Head Coach Steere will be looking for immediate upperclassmen leadership from her captains senior Grace Garstang (Southington, CT/Southington) and junior Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional).  “My captains play two different roles; Danielle (Chuba) is more of a player’s captain.  She will set a good example on the field in terms of her skill and talent,” said Steere.  “Grace is more of the coaches’ captain.  I will communicate through her on defense because she is a senior and knows the game well.”   These two players will be counted on to be the glue that holds the team together throughout the season.

THE TEAM

Junior Jen Thompson (Easton, MD/Easton) brings a very high touted resume to the Mustangs with several years experience in the sport before coming to Mount Ida.  A left handed attacker, Thompson will be responsible for tallying a plethora of goals throughout the season.  She possesses great stick skills and will be the “go-to” player on attack hailing from the lacrosse capital of the world (Maryland).

Junior captain Danielle Chuba (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) comes to the Mustangs with a long list of solid experience throughout her playing career.  Chuba will be a leader in the midfield leading by example with incredible stick skills.  She will be looked upon to score several goals and will be instrumental throughout the entire field.

Junior Alexandra Sarno (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport Senior) joins the Mustangs after learning the sport last year when the team was a club sport and picked up the game very quickly.  Her athleticism has propelled her as a goal scorer and a solid feeder in the attacking position.  Sarno is continually improving and has become a student of the game and will be throughout her career as a Mustang.

Junior Kira Feeter (Keene, NH/Keene) also joins the Mustangs after learning the game last year during the program’s club season.  Kira is a member of the Mount Ida College women’s volleyball team along with playing lacrosse.  She has picked up the game very quickly due to her natural athleticism.  She will be strong off draw control and will be looked to in transition.

Junior Becky Tisbert (Cambridge, VT/Lamoille Union) is a multi-sport athlete who has participated in soccer, basketball, and softball for Mount Ida.
