Rams Use Strong Second Half to Break Tie, Deal Mustangs Loss in GNAC Finale

NEWTON, Mass. – In the final Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer game of the season, Suffolk used a four-goal second half to collect a 5-1 victory over Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Junior Rachael Reese (Santa Cruz, Calif.) scored the lone goal for Mount Ida, and freshman goalie Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) made nine saves in the loss.

The Rams (6-11, 6-5 GNAC) were led by seniors Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) and Taylor Miranda (Smithtown, N.Y.). McHale scored a brace of goals and added an assist, setting up Miranda, who scored her team-high twelfth goal of the year, and had a helper as well.

Reese got the Mustangs out in front with her fourth goal of the year just 2:43 into the game. On a Mustang free kick from their own end, sophomore Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) delivered the ball deep into Rams territory.

Her classmate Kelleigh Lombard (Saugus, Mass.) corralled the ball and slotted it to Reese, who was streaking towards the box. The striker finished past Suffolk junior goalie Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) to put the home team on top, with Moody and Lombard each picking up assists.

It took less than four minutes for the visitors to level the score again, and it came through Miranda, who was on the end of a great cross from the right side by McHale and was able to poke the ball into the near post to tie the game at one with six and a half minutes played.

The teams went to the break knotted at a goal apiece, but two goals within a span of a minute from the visitors changed the complexion of the contest.

Katherine Cote (Attleboro, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute when she blasted a pass from Miranda past Beaulieu for her fourth goal of the year.

Less than a minute later, sophomore Alicia Villett (Peabody, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal when she picked off the ball in the Mustang's defensive third.

McHale added two insurance markers, netting in the 61st and 78th minutes, with the second goal coming on a header off of a corner delivered by senior Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.).

The Mustangs were outshot 27-16 and saw Suffolk double them up in corner kick opportunities, 4-2.

Junior Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) had six shot attempts for the Mustangs, two of them on frame, which were both saved by Brouillette, who made six stops in the victory for Suffolk.

Mount Ida (3-13, 2-9 GNAC) wraps up their regular season on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm. The Mustangs will host Framingham State and celebrate Senior Day, honoring the players making their final appearances wearing the Green and White.

Suffolk will await their seeding for the GNAC tournament, which starts a week from today.
