NEWTON, Mass. – Mount Ida College women's tennis will feature a strong group of veteran leadership as they begin their 2016 season, hoping to make their third consecutive trip to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) postseason tournament.
That leadership begins at the top of the lineup, where Mount Ida returns their top two singles, Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) and Jenna Jarman (Auburn, N.Y.), who together made up the first doubles team for the Mustangs a year ago as well.
Levy, a junior captain, has played at the top of the Mount Ida lineup for the last two seasons, and a year ago she earned five wins at the first singles spot, including a 4-0 week at first singles and first doubles that garnered her the first ever GNAC Player of the Week Award for a Mount Ida women's tennis player.
Jarman burst onto the scene in her first season at the #2 spot, collecting five victories herself, and she and Levy went 5-4 at the first doubles spot as well.
Mackenzie Bumpus (Wilmington, Mass.) played five different positions for the Mustangs last year, earning a victory at #6 singles, while junior Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) returns to the lineup following her convincing 6-0, 6-1 singles victory.
Seniors Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.) and Danielle Barnabe (Warwick, R.I.) will provide veteran leadership and also paired together for a third doubles conference win last season, while freshman Amanda Garner (Coventry, R.I.) and junior Gabriela Araya (Framingham, Mass.), new to the team, will make their Mustang debuts this season.
The 2016 tennis season gets underway within the hour, as the Mustangs are at Becker College for their opening match. Their home opener comes on September 16th when they host Lesley at 3:00 PM.
