NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College women's tennis team ended their regular season this weekend by dropping a pair of matches, a 6-3 defeat to non-conference foe Curry College and 9-0 in their home finale against Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Suffolk University.
In the last regular season matches for seniors Danielle Barnabe (Warwick, R.I.) and Katlyn Jesse (Marshfield, Mass.), the Mustangs were overwhelmed by the Rams, who improve to 8-8 and 5-1 in the GNAC.
Jenna Jarman (Auburn, N.Y.) and Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) battled hard but fell 8-4 to the number one doubles tandem of Aidiana Sagyndykova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and Elena Cisneros Garcia (Barcelona, Spain).
Amanda Garner (Coventry, R.I.) and Barnabe took a game from Isabel Rathlev (Wellesley, Mass.) and Jacquelyn Nakamura (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) but fell at number three doubles, while Jesse and Yuliana Chairez (Waltham, Mass.) were blanked at number two doubles by Eugenia Skorobogatov and Christina Texidor (Miami, Fla.).
The singles play saw more of the same action, as Sagyndykova beat Jarman 6-0, 6-2 at the top spot and Skorobogatov handled Levy 6-1, 6-0.
Jesse had the most competitive singles match of the day, falling to Garcia 6-1, 6-3 at the #3 spot. Hannah Bassett (Needham, Mass.) got some time in at number six singles, but was blanked by Nakamura at #6.
Friday, October 14th – Curry College 6, Mount Ida 3
Jarman and Levy won at the top two singles positions and at number one doubles, but Mount Ida couldn't claim a point in the bottom half of the lineup and fell to the Colonels at the Big Nine Courts.
With the win the Colonels finish their season with an overall record of 2-13.
Jarman won her match 6-0, 6-0 against Keeley Hardy (Charleston, S.C.), while Levy outlasted Curry's No. 2 singles player Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.) 4-6, 6-4, 10-3.
In No. 3 singles, the Colonels Laura Ferris (Shelton, Conn.) bested Jesse, 6-1, 6-1. Katelyn Harrington (Westport, Mass.) earned the No. 4 singles win for Curry, 6-0, 6-0 defeating Chairez.
The Colonel's Stephanie Leblanc (East Bridgewater, Mass.) claimed her tilt verse Amanda Garner (Coventry, R.I.), 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 slot and at the No. 6 position the Colonel's Alexis Mclea-Perry (Plymouth, Mass.) produced, 6-1, 6-0 victories over Mount Ida's Hannah Bassett (Needham, Mass).
In doubles, the No.1 pair of Jarman and Levy earned an 8-1 victory over the Colonels Hardy and Prete.
The No. 2 duo of Ferris and Harrington bested the Mustang's Jesse and Chairez, 8-1. In the final match on the day, No.3 Curry doubles partners, Leblanc and Jennifer Dube (Coventry, Conn.) outlasted Garner and Danielle Barnabe (Warwick, R.I.), 8-0.
Mount Ida will get ready for their 2016 GNAC women's tennis first round match, which will take place on the road on Wednesday, October 19th.
