NEWTON, Mass. – Behind a game-high 23 kills from junior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.), Mount Ida College opened their 2016 slate with a 3-1 win over Becker College in non-conference women's volleyball action at Mount Ida Athletic Center Thursday night.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead with 25-20 and 25-22 set wins, Mount Ida had the chance to sweep the Hawks in both team's season opener, but Becker fended off a match point and took the third set 27-25.
In the fourth set, the Mustangs (1-0) overcame a 4-0 deficit and quickly tied the game at eight before opening up a 13-9 lead with the serving run of Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.), who was also in double digits for the Mustangs with 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) added seven kills and nine digs for the Mustangs, and she and Reidy each served a pair of aces.
The Hawks (0-1) used a balanced offensive attack, with nine different players recording kills, including a team high of 11 from Marissa Turner (Coventry, R.I.) and seven from Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.), who turned in a .438 hitting percentage and made no attacking errors on 16 attempts.
Freshman Alexis Bell (Salem, Conn.) recorded 39 assists and eleven digs for the Mustangs in her first collegiate game, while much of the Hawks offense ran through junior Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine), who had 14 assists and nine digs, along with two service aces.
Defensively, Reidy racked up 18 digs, a number matched as the game high by Becker freshman Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn.). Also of note was the 17 digs of Becker sophomore libero Brittney Bullis (Stafford, Va.).
